Open Your New York Mouth

All images courtesy of New York MouthWe have a special feature today: an interview with Craig Kanarick, one of the founders of New York Mouth.

What is New York Mouth? In their own words, they're an online store whose goal is to help you find the best, most delicious and most interesting indie food products and to help indie makers grow their business.

Sounds like a big job, wouldn't you say?

Craig is familiar with challenges, having started six companies, he knows the ups and downs of a small start-up business. On excursions to Brooklyn brick-and-mortar specialty food shops, he realized that there was no way for these stores to increase their sales, other than increasing their foot traffic. Often, the infrastructure and inventory for an online presence was not available.

Enter New York Mouth. New York Mouth offers the ability to help small food companies to grow by giving them access to an online store. It also gives us foodies the chance to grow (our waistlines), as it offers all these fantastic products in one place, so we don't have to hoof it around from random artisinal bakery to home-made chocolate shop to the goat cheese farm all in one day.

What you weren't doing that? Well, I was. That's why I started bike riding. Pay attention, people.

But how do you know it's good? Craig insists that he personally has tried everything on the site. "We eat extensively here," he reports, and they have weekly tastings.

Liddabit Sweets Snack'r Candy BarThey must, as there's a lot of new food product out there. Especially here, by which I mean in New York City and Brooklyn. There has been a bit of a "food explosion" going on nation-wide, but it seems concentrated in Brooklyn which appears to be some kind of hot bed of indie food producers. Craig is quick to add that there's more edge to the food movement in NYC. It's a newer scene with a lot of creativity – it's got to be good to make it here.

In this vein, the good people of New York Mouth consider themselves "qualitarians," sifting (or in this case tasting) though the wealth of artisinal food products out there to bring you the best.

They try to focus on products that tout old-fashioned production methods or recipes and feature local and natural ingredients....with extra credit for those who go organic.

The result is an expertly curated selection of artisinal, small batch food products. In supporting the really little guy, New York Mouth hopes to help us shop better and eat better too.
