Cook Like A Mermaid

Everyone knows mermaids can't cook. How do you fire up the stove underwater? Now that's a recipe for disaster. Pun intended.

Instead, mermaids like to forage for pre-cooked or no-cook items. Like marshmallows. And cheese doodles. Not really high in nutrional content, but it's much easier to propel yourself around when you're buoyant and you have giant fins attached to you.

Enter Cher, Winona Ryder and Christina Ricci: three mermaids that know how to make a banquet out of such no-cook items. Consider my favorite clip from the movie:

In honor of this scene, I too wanted to make some no-cook skewers. But not with marshmallows and gumdrops. Instead, I give you: Manchego Cheese (looks like a marshmallow when cut into cubes) and Quince Paste (kinda like a gum drop but waaaaaay better) Toothpick Skewers!

Manchego cheese and quince paste are a perfect team. Why is this? They are like the odd couple: the Manchego cheese is salty with a tart little bite (especially if you get an aged version like I did), while the quince paste is sweet with a slight grainy texture.

Now you COULD make your own quince paste. Since this is No-Cook Week here on the blog, I cannot recommend that. but I can recommend a very reputable preserver (Brook from Learn to Preserve) who has some fabulous instrcitions here. You can even follow her on twitter, which I highly recommend.

Instead, I got my cheese and paste from Murray's Cheese on Bleecker. Then, I cut it up into cubes and popped it on toothpicks. This is all you need to do. You can put these little gems on a cheeseboard with some other cheeses, or you can just wander around your apartment eating them like lollipops. Your choice.

If you want to be happy for the rest of your life, cut some cheese and quince paste with a knife!...
