Breakfast at City Cakes

I was walking down 18th Street in the city after the my morning workout. Usually at this point I'm so hungry I want to chew on my own elbow. I was thinking I would get some breakfast on my way into work. Some oatmeal, something healthy that would fit in with the training diet.
That was when I saw this sign: NYC's BEST cookies. Did you notice the rays of sunlight illuminating the chalkboard from the top, like some kind of holy manifesto? I even thought I heard angels singing...(possibly a hunger-induced auditory hallucination, but nevertheless...) These details were not lost on me, and I decided it was not only a sign, but a SIGN. And I should get breakfast here. A breakfast of cookies.
I descended the small flight of stairs to the basement bakery of City Cakes. If it weren't for the glorious sign, it would be an easy spot to miss. I checked out the various cookie offerings, and since it was breakfast time, I chose a giant (seriously, big as my head) oatmeal raisin cookie. I figured that since I had been planning on eating oatmeal anyway, this could still qualify...
I noticed that City Cakes also has a selection of perfectly-iced and sprinkled cupcakes, and they create artful wedding and event cakes as well.

I walked out of the store with my giant cookie, and immediately dove right in. It's perfectly chewy (just how I like my cookies). Your teeth just squeeze right into it, like into a perfectly fitting dress. The brown sugar and butter blend together in complementary proportions. And if you happen upon a raisin, they are plump, juicy and the size of olives. It's almost as if little bunches of grapes were grouped together, dried in the sunshine and thrown into a cookie.
Since there are more flavors for me to sample, I will need to return for more "breakfasts".
Check out City Cakes here, and follow 'em on Twitter here so you can stay updated on what's hot out of the oven.

Oatmeal raisin--that's my favorite! Perfectly healthy way to jump start the day!
The frosting on the cupcakes is addictive. I love the carrot cake! An oatmeal raisin cookie is breakfast. With a glass of milk or orange juice, you are set for the morning!
and I just finished the choc/basil cupcake! gotta get them while they're out, because they disappear fast..18th St. LOVES City Cakes!!!!!
